GDA Launches New Garage Heating Project Repurposing Waste Heat in Sweden

GDA collaborates with local partners to pioneer the use of excess heat from one of its data centers for garage heating, setting a new standard for energy repurposing in the Bitcoin mining industry

Houston, TX August 6, 2024 – Genesis Digital Assets Limited (“GDA”), one of the largest bitcoin mining companies in the world in terms of hash rate, announces the launch of a heat repurposing initiative with Swedish company Muttern Fastigheter in the city of Norsjö led by its local subsidiary GDA Sweden AB. This project marks the first instance of using the heat generated from a data center operation to warm a large garage storing locally-owned equipment in Sweden. GDA already operates several data centers in the country, including facilities in Porjus and Örträsk, which both use carbon-free electricity sourced from nearby hydroelectric power stations, and is now consolidating its presence and deepening its ties with the local community.

The project in Norsjö is the latest example of how this industry is exploring various innovative methods to repurpose the heat it generates, such as heating greenhouses during cold seasons and heating swimming pools. GDA’s project with Muttern extends this innovative trend, which will benefit local businesses by reducing the costs of preventing snow-cleaning trucks from freezing.

GDA provides 90,000 cubic meters of hot air per hour at 52°C across a 1,200 square meter area. Heating garages is a necessity in a region such as Västerbotten County, where temperatures often get as low as -25°C. For this project, GDA set up a facility running 150 machines that generate a hashrate of 14 PH/s, using over 500 kW of power. The electricity used is entirely renewable, thanks to its proximity to the 122 MW Vargfors Hydroelectric Power Station.

“Our venture into heating a large garage space using computation excess heat is a practical example of how the industry can contribute positively and integrate with local communities,” said Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, Executive President of GDA. “We are proud to pioneer these kinds of efforts because they reaffirm GDA’s role as a leader in sustainability and show how bitcoin mining byproducts can be used for community utility.”

“GDA’s creative approach to addressing the needs of companies in the area demonstrates a valuable intersection between new technology advancements and local community benefits. Norsjö Municipality is happy that the collaboration between these two companies is working so well, and we hope for more projects like this in the future,” said Beatrice Bergqvist, head of Business and Development at Norsjö Municipality.

“When we met with GDA and first learned about this idea, we were amazed by the great opportunities this industry presents to local communities worldwide. I truly believe this could be the future of heating,” said Jörgen Lindström, part owner of Muttern Fastigheter.

The data center, emblematic of successful business-to-business collaboration, was completed in less than 45 days. Norsjö Municipality is now looking into how heat from data centers or other processes can be used for heating in municipal buildings and how to design such a collaboration.
